DIYing your brand on a budget and trying to pick out your fonts and typefaces? I’ve picked out the best free fonts Canva has to offer. Yes, free! All of these fonts are free to use within the Canva design space – even in the free version of Canva.
Use this list to narrow down your options (Canva has a plethora of them) with the confidence of knowing your fonts are brand designer-approved!
Serif Fonts
A serif font is a font that includes additional “feet” or serifs on the tips of each character. Initially more popular in printed materials like newspapers, serif fonts provide a more buttoned-up and traditional look.
Here are my top picks from Canva’s free selection of serif fonts:
Alice
Caladea
Catchy Mager
CMU Serif
Sans-Serif Fonts
Sans-serif fonts, as you might have guessed, are the opposite of serif fonts. “Sans” means “without,” so a sans-serif font is a font without the serifs. Sans-serif fonts have traditionally been more popular on the web and provide a modern look.
Here are my top picks from Canva’s free selection of sans-serif fonts:
Aileron
Alata
Barlow Condensed
Kollektif
Nourd
Script
A script font is a font that is based on the handwritten styles of cursive writing, hand lettering, and calligraphy. You’ll usually see fluid strokes, connected letters, and varied line weights to mimic pen pressure from handwritten words.
Script fonts can provide a variety of vibes to your brand depending on which one you select. Some might appear more playful and informal while others might lean more towards elegance and femininity.
Script fonts are best for shorter copy and text that will be presented in a larger size as it can be hard to read when smaller. For example, I don’t recommend using a script font for paragraphs of text.
Here are my top picks from Canva’s free selection of script fonts:
Halimum
Jimmy Script
Lumios Marker
Moontime
Nickainley
Display
A display font is a font that is used for, well, display purposes. In other words, these fonts are meant for headlines and short copy, which actually makes them perfect for logos.
Like script fonts, display fonts can provide a wide variety of styles to your brand depending on the font you choose.
Here are my top picks from Canva’s free selection of display fonts:
Alta
Baron
Pluma
Beyond these free options, Canva also offers premium fonts that are available for Canva Pro users (along with a myriad of other benefits). If you’re looking to upgrade, you can sign up for a 30-day free trial of Canva Pro before making the full commitment.
However, these free fonts are more than enough to DIY your brand fonts or even pull together a logo.
